A pilot project to trial the use of lobster pots as a more sustainable alternative to highly destructive trammel nets was carried out with 25 fishers in Mayreau. The participating fishers received training in how to assemble the lobster pots from fishers in Bequia, another Grenadine Island. They also received training in sustainable lobster fishing from fisheries officers from the St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada Fisheries Divisions. The training focused on the biological rationale for the lobster fishing regulations, and actions fishers can take to manage their stocks sustainably. Some fishers expressed that the training gave them a greater appreciation for the need to follow the regulations.
